EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is the eradication of Breast Cancer through education and advocacy. The Executive Director provides leadership and strategic direction in carrying out our mission at the direction of the Board of Directors. The Executive Director develops and maintains strong ties to the nonprofit, business, and medical communities to support the efforts of VBCF in the fight against breast cancer. Responsibilities include management of daily operations, supervision of paid and contract staff, fiscal management, fund development, management of board business and public/media relations. The Executive Director, who is hired by the Board of Directors, reports directly to the Board President. Some evening and weekend hours required. Limited travel involved.

RESPONSIBILITIES:


OPERATIONAL/ADMINISTRATIVE/PERSONNEL

•Facilitate implementation of Board decisions and policies.
•Ensure maintenance of and/or set up of administrative and accounting infrastructures as needed.
•Ensure implementation of operational procedures.
•Ensure reports are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
•Recruit, hire, supervise and terminate staff and contract personnel.
•Enforce personnel policies and work with Personnel Committee to recommend new policies as needed.
•Promote an environment of learning by providing and supporting professional development opportunities for employees.
•Ensure maintenance of official VBCF corporate documents and records.
•Perform other operational, administrative and personnel duties as needed and as directed by the Board President.

FINANCES
•Ensure fiduciary responsibility, sound financial management and public accountability for contributions, income, expenses and all assets.
•Oversee development of fiscal year operating budget for approval by the Finance Committee and Board.
•Ensure organization is in compliance with all federal and state rules and regulations.
•Hire external auditors.
•Monitor and manage financial health of organization including adherence to operating budget.
•Enforce financial policies and identify new policies for Finance Committee and Board action as needed.
•Work with Finance Committee on long-term and short-term investment strategies.
• Perform other financial duties as needed and as directed by Board President.

FUND DEVELOPMENT
• In concert with Development Committee and Board, develop, initiate, recommend and execute an annual fundraising strategy comprising annual campaign, membership outreach, major donor solicitation, United Way and Combined Virginia Campaign donations, special events, sales and foundation and corporate solicitation
• Work with board to ensure organization has adequate and diversified financial resources to provide a stable financial base.
• Develop ongoing sources and approaches for solicitation of donations and contributions.
• Provide leadership in actively raising and leveraging funds.
• Perform other fundraising duties as needed and as directed by Board President.

MANAGEMENT OF BOARD BUSINESS
• Work with Board, staff and volunteers to set vision and strategic plan for organization and have primary responsibility for overseeing implementation of plan.
• Work closely with Board President to recommend committee structure, scope of work and to coordinate Board meetings.
• Assist Board with fundraising and policy development responsibilities.
• Report regularly to Board President on organizational concerns and other updates.
• Work with Board president to identify and meet Board development needs.
• •Support continuous Board recruitment, education and development to ensure VBCF depth of leadership for furtherance of mission.
• Provide guidance and direction to VBCF Board members, districts and chapters.
• Review and inform Board members of current issues in breast cancer detection, diagnosis, and treatment; advocacy and awareness; and organization’s activities.
• Staff Board committees as needed.
• Perform other board management duties as needed and as directed by Board President.

PUBLIC/MEDIA RELATIONS
• Provide positive public relations and mature judgment in dealing with the nonprofit, business, medical, and volunteer communities and the general public.
• Develop and oversee a comprehensive media package to highlight the organization’s mission, and position the organization effectively within the community (written, audiovisual, and Internet media).
• Compile, interpret and present information in an effective manner, orally and in writing, for varied target audiences.
• Promote and ensure a positive presence in the community through outreach activities and collaboration with targeted organizations and groups.
• Serve as liaison with national and regional cancer organizations, including local, state and national government officials and the medical community.
• Develop and maintain media relationships; develop press releases and articles for publication. Have final approval on all written, audiovisual, and Internet materials -- including VBCF newsletter.
• Represent VBCF at special events and as directed by the Board President.
• Perform other public/media relations duties as needed and as directed by Board President.

ADVOCACY
• Inform Board and VBCF members of state and federal legislative issues for Board and/or grassroots membership action.
• Identify and develop opportunities for appropriate collaborative activities with other community, health or advocacy organizations to increase breast cancer advocacy.
• Work with Advocacy Committee to recommend position statements on medical issues and to identify state legislative priorities for Board approval.
• Serve as Virginia Field Coordinator for the National Breast Cancer Coalition.
• Organize VBCF presence for State and National Lobby Days.
• Perform other advocacy duties as needed and as directed by Board President.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university.
2. A minimum 3 years experience in nonprofit management.
3. Proven fund development record.
4. Excellent planning and organizational skills.
5. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
6. Ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultures and socio-economic groups.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Knowledge of current trends in breast cancer awareness and advocacy.
2. Familiarity with consumer empowerment philosophy.
3. Prior advocacy, legislative lobbying experience.
