Patient Advocate Training with National Center for Health Research
Jun 2 – Jun 3 all-day

National Center for Health Research (NCHR) is seeking to train patient advocates in Washington, D.C., Friday, June 2, and Saturday, June 3, 2017. The 2-day workshop is free and includes meals. Hotel rooms and travel scholarships to DC are available for those who live at least 40 miles away. The workshop is designed to help acquire the information, skills, and confidence needed to influence the development and evaluation of treatments used by patients across the country. NCHR is particularly interested in adults who have patient advocacy experience – either as an individual or with a nonprofit organization or government agency. Seating is limited, so apply early.

Eric Zhou, PhD will discuss, “Anxiety, Sleep, and Fatigue.” Dr. Zhou is currently an Instructor at Harvard Medical School and a Staff Psychologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He actively conducts research examining cancer survivorship issues, including insomnia treatment in young adult survivors, and improving quality of life for cancer patients. Some of the concepts he will highlight are:
  • Why does sleep matter for cancer patients?
  • What should you do, and not do, in order to sleep better?
  • What evidence-based ways are there to manage your anxiety and fatigue to improve your quality?

Apply for the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s 2017 Project LEAD® Institute
The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) is now accepting applications for the July 2017 Project LEAD Institute. NBCC has been training breast cancer activists to influence research, advance public policy and drive the adoption of quality standards in health care for more than 20 years. If you have a serious interest in scientific study and in preparing yourself for participation in the policy-setting and decision-making roles of breast cancer research advocacy, don’t miss this opportunity. The course is challenging and focuses on the basic language and concepts of molecular biology, genetics, clinical trials, epidemiology, research methods and advocacy.

Acceptance to the Project LEAD® Institute is a competitive application process and space is limited. The Institute will be held July 9-14, 2017 in La Jolla, CA. The application deadline is April 18, 2017 at 5 PM EST. Tuition is free and includes all Institute materials and meals. Applicants must be a member of NBCC. Flex Zone Fitness Breast Cancer 5k, is a charity/ fundraiser event that will be held in Downtown Portsmouth. The race will start at the Portsmouth Pavillion, Sept. 30th, 2017 at 8:30 AM. Proceeds will go to Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation. Flex Zone Fitness goals for this 5k run are to bring awareness to breast cancer, and provide the Tidewater area an opportunity to enjoy a nice outdoor scenery, while receiving a great workout.
