2018 Sherry Kohlenberg Award Winner

Dr. David Weintritt, board certified breast surgeon and founder of the National Breast Center Foundation, is the 2018 recipient of the Sherry Kohlberg Healthcare Service Award from The Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF). This award was created by VBCF to recognize Virginians employed in the healthcare field who “exhibit a deep and abiding commitment to the fight against breast cancer” and to honor Sherry, a healthcare administrator and co-founder of the VBCF, who died from breast cancer in 1993.

Here is an excerpt of his nomination by Nueva Vida:

We are nominating Dr. David C. Weintritt based upon his amazing dedication to the battle against breast cancer. As an individual who has spent the last 25 years diligently working to assure equal access to state-of-the-art cancer care, regardless of an individual’s insurance status, he is inspiring and should serve as a model to other providers of breast cancer care.

Dr. Weintritt completed his college and medical training at the University of Florida. From his work at Andrews Air Force base to his work in private practice, Dr. Weintritt has worked with medical teams practicing cutting edge and minimally invasive breast cancer treatments. In 2003, Dr. Weintritt opened his own practice in Alexandria, VA. He started a program for sentinel node biopsy and was the first to bring partial breast radiation to the area. In 2010, Dr. Weintritt was named a director of the INOVA Mount Vernon Breast Care Institute. In 2012, Dr. Weintritt founded the National Breast Center to continue raising awareness of new treatment options and to expand services available for breast cancer patients. In 2014, Dr. Weintritt founded the National Breast Center Foundation with the goal of improving access to care, technology for breast cancer screening and treatment.

His own words exemplify his exceptional care and concern for his patients and honor Sherry’s memory, making him VBCF’s 2018 recipient of the Sherry Kohlberg Healthcare Service Award.

“Every patient is unique and deserves a plan tailored to them. Getting opinions from a large number of specialists means nothing unless you have a team that adapts their skills to YOUR needs. My goal is to combine the least invasive with the most therapeutic approach – removing the cancer but not a woman’s sense of well-being.”
