Helping Virginians Overcome Financial Barriers to Breast Health Services
Why We Created This Fund
The breast cancer journey starts before a diagnosis is made. It begins with testing—mammograms, ultrasounds, and biopsies—that are essential for identifying breast cancer early.
Under the Affordable Care Act, screening mammograms are covered at no cost for those with insurance. However, patients needing follow-up diagnostics after an abnormal result or presenting symptoms can face significant costs, as there is no national requirement for insurers to cover these essential services.
Our fund ensures that financial barriers don’t prevent anyone from accessing these life-saving services. Created in partnership with regional hospital systems, Virginians in need can access diagnostic testing with no out-of-pocket health costs. VBCF does not yet have every region of the state covered, but we’re also trying to fix this access issue through our advocacy work at the state level.
