IRA Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)
One way to help others and make a difference in the fight against breast cancer is through charitable giving through a retirement account. An option to consider, especially for those who are age 70.5 or older, is giving to the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation directly from your individual retirement account (IRA) Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). RMDs are annual distributions that you must take from your traditional IRA account once you reach age 70.5, and they are generally considered taxable income. However, by directing your RMD to VBCF, you can reduce the impact of taxes on your income while also supporting an important cause.
This is known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) and can be a tax-efficient way of donating to a charity like VBCF. However, it is important to note that the contribution cannot be used as a charitable tax deduction, so if you are looking for a bigger tax benefit, you may want to consult a tax advisor for guidance.
These distributions must usually be made by year’s end and the check must be transfered diretly from your IRA custodian to VBCF, not from you personally. Most IRA plan sponsors will need to be contacted by early December to ensure timely distribution.

Why Support VBCF?
For over 30 years, VBCF has supported Virginians impacted by breast cancer. We began in 1991 as pioneers in the fields of breast cancer education and advocacy. VBCF is an independent, statewide, state-based non-profit organization, and all funds donated are used to educate and advocate for our fellow Virginians:
Your gift offers COMFORT by providing your neighbor with a Newly Diagnosed Kit to easily identify local, state, and national breast cancer support resources.
Your gift provides UNDERSTANDING by providing free educational materials and programs that educate your fellow Virginians about breast cancer.
Your gift enables CHANGE by training volunteer advocates to push for increased breast cancer research funding and for policies that improve access to screenings, treatment, and support at the state and national levels.
VBCF is a 501(c)3 organization as determined by the IRS with federal tax identification number 54-1633519. Gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
