“October” Starts in August: VBCF’s Busy Breast Cancer Awareness Season

That’s a wrap on another very busy October at VBCF. You may not be aware, but at VBCF “October” actually starts in August! In August, we usually see an increase in educational materials orders and presentation and resource table requests for September and October. This year, we had at least one educational event EVERY WEEK from August 27th through November 2nd, sometimes multiple events a day in October. Our small staff couldn’t have made it through the season without our dedicated volunteers who bundled materials, gave presentations, and staffed tables for us.

We spoke to sororities and at military bases, workplaces, and mom groups, churches, and retirement homes. Anywhere there was a group of people who wanted to learn about breast cancer, we tried to be there. We traveled the state from Harrisonburg to Blacksburg to the Eastern Shore. We go where we are invited, so if you want us in your community please let us know!

We also had some amazing conversations with Virginians about how to support and encourage women to get their mammograms. One pair of friends decided to plan a coffee date after the first mammogram for one of them! Men wanted to know more about how to care for and encourage their wives to care for themselves. And we often heard our favorite lines “You reminded me that I need to schedule my appointment!” or “I just had my mammogram!”

Thank you all for supporting us during this October “season” and every October. We attend health fairs and give educational presentations throughout the year, so you don’t have to wait until next October to invite us to your community! Fill out our speaker request form and select either a resource table, virtual presentation, or in-person presentation, and let’s work together to educate Virginians about breast cancer.
